Whakaari/White Island is an active andesite stratovolcano situated off the coast of New Zealand's North Island. It is captivatingly beautiful and a marvel of nature, with its rugged cliffs and 321-metre (1,053 ft) peak. Its location in the Bay of Plenty, 48 km (30 mi) from the mainland makes it a unique destination to get up close with a live volcano by scenic aerial flight. The island has been in a near continual state of eruption since its sighting in 1769.
