Kolin Pirunkirkko, also known as Devil’s Church, is a captivating cave located in Koli National Park.

Pirunkirkko is a 33-meter-long Z-shaped boulder cave with a fascinating geological history. The cave’s roof is formed from massive boulders, creating a unique and mystical environment.

The cave is located at Rantatie Road, approximately 12 kilometers south of Koli. There is parking lot and signs.

In Finnish folklore, this place has been considered mystical and sacred. It is associated with stories of earth spirits, nature beings, and even the devil. According to the most well-known tale, the devil resides in the very last corner of the cave, treating the cave passage used by humans as merely an entrance hall. The true church, it is said, reveals itself only beyond that last corner and the devil’s presence.

The place exudes ancient natural power, history, and mystique. The well-known painter and art professor Eero Järnefelt also spent a lot of time in Koli area and drew inspiration from the area. Järnefelt visited Pirunkirkko and was evidently impressed by its unique atmosphere. On the bright wall at the back of the cave, the artist inscribed a message in 1893, which is still faintly visible:

– Eero Järnefelt

Please do not touch the painted message.
