The Santo Da Serra Market is a truly local gem, tucked away on top of the island, close to the well-known golf course. We highly recommend visiting this market because it gives you an authentic taste of what Madeira is all about.

As you mingle with the locals, you'll have the chance to try a variety of local treats available at the stands. But the real highlight here is the fresh produce—everything is incredibly tasty and bursting with flavor. It's a fantastic place to pick up some groceries and experience the local food culture firsthand.

The market also has another section where locals shop for everyday essentials, from duvets and clothing to shampoo and other necessities. It's fascinating to see how this market is a part of the locals' weekly routine. You'll often find people gathered around the Bolo do Caco and roasted chicken stands, chatting and sharing a poncha, beer, or coffee on the street. The atmosphere is lively and bustling, and it happens every single Sunday.

One of our personal highlights at Santo Da Serra Market was standing in line for the roasted chicken that everyone seems to crave. We took our chicken to the nearby Santo da Serra Park and enjoyed it with a beautiful view of the valley. A perfect picnic spot.

I also picked up an organic shampoo made without any chemicals, which was a great find. It’s interesting to see how a few expats on the island have also set up stands, selling various items that blend with what the locals offer.

Santo Da Serra Market is truly a place where cultures merge, yet it remains a heartfelt homage to authentic Portuguese culture. It’s a must-visit to experience the real Madeira.
