Kirkjugolf ("Church Floor") in South Iceland is an interesting geological feature. The hexagonal basalt stones on the ground look like they belong in an ancient church, hence the name "church floor." But don't be fooled - these formations are all-natural, formed by cooling lava thousands of years ago. Despite the misleading name, Kirkjugolf is a cool spot to stretch your legs and marvel at Mother Nature's handiwork.

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: A natural hexagonal basalt floor in South Iceland.

  • Best season: Any (but might be covered in snow during winter).

  • Best time of day: Any.

  • Nice to know: This spot is probably not at the top of the list for many travellers, but I can testify that my kids loved playing around there and making up all kinds of games.
