This was the first time I’d ever seen a mountain with steam coming out of it, which was honestly so cool! Rainbow Mountain Scenic Reserve is a stunning natural area known for its vibrant colors and unique geothermal features (yep, that’s where the steam’s coming from, haha). The hike up is called the Rainbow Mountain and Crater Lake Outlook Track, which is 6.1 kilometers return and should take about 2 hours.
While the elevation gain of about 350 meters isn’t too intense, you’ll still work up a bit of a sweat on your way up. Within the first 500 meters, you’ll reach the turnoff to Crater Lake, which may be blocked off, but hey, just a little secret, you can squeeze past the wood and grab some awesome pics at the lookout (be safe, though). Keep going and you’ll pass several more lookout points with incredible views of the diverse landscape, including steaming vents, colorful mineral deposits, and lush native vegetation. It’s a sick walk with so much to see along the way.
