Takachiho Gorge, arguably one of the coolest natural wonders of Japan, is located in Miyazaki Prefecture - a stunning natural wonder carved by the Gokase River. Though it might be a bit of a drive to get to, the gorge features towering basalt cliffs that resemble dragon scales and a picturesque waterfall called Minainotaki. Visitors can explore the gorge from both below, by renting a boat and cruising along the river, or from above, by walking along a paved path with breathtaking views - though you HAVE to book VERY early to get one of the rowboats, otherwise you just have to walk the path like we did, which was fine. Parking is a bit confusing, but drive all the way down to the bottom and there should be parking available in the lot. Don't forget to check out the freshwater aquarium, fishing pond, and local shops near the southern end of the gorge, and there's also a nice temple nearby with decent restaurants in the town for a complete experience!
