This is a one-of-a-kind guesthouse housed in a repurposed elementary school. The stay was both affordable and unforgettable, blending comfort with a strong sense of community.
Comfortable and Clean Lodging
The rooms were dormitory-style, with bunk beds for 2–3 people, offering privacy and comfort for couples or small families. Despite the building's history, the interiors were well-maintained, featuring new air conditioning and heating systems that kept the rooms warm during the chilly November nights. Shared showers, toilets, and a communal lounge were clean and well-equipped.
Unlike many old school buildings that can feel dated, this space was spotless and welcoming. Hiking trails around the area added to the charm, with scenic views that made morning walks a peaceful escape.
A Unique Community Spirit
What stood out most was the incredible community built around this facility. The former school now hosts about 50–100 retired residents, each playing an active role in daily life. Some clean local schools, while others organize events or host activities for their neighbors. It was inspiring to see how retirees could find purpose while living together in a supportive environment.
Young people also live on-site, offering services to the elders, such as running restaurants, providing massages, or organizing workshops. One grandmother even shared the history of the place, expressing their dedication to health and well-being. Their on-site store exclusively sells organic produce and foods sourced from across Japan, and the focus on wellness was evident everywhere.
The meals were another highlight—different restaurants visited daily to cook for both residents and guests, offering a diverse and delicious dining experience. It was heartwarming to see kids visiting the area, and even school buses arriving to pick up and drop off locals, emphasizing the integration of multiple generations.
On-Site Café and Facilities
The guesthouse also features Café Koko, where you can enjoy breakfast for ¥600 and dinner for ¥1,000 (with prior reservation). The café even offers takeout and party platters if requested in advance. If you’re staying longer, you’ll appreciate the communal kitchen and laundry facilities, as well as the shared lounge area for relaxing after a day of exploring.
