The Cairo Citadel, otherwise known as the Citadel of Salah El Din, is a spectacular and historic example of Islamic-era fortress architecture. Located in Cairo, Egypt, this bold military fortification was built by Salah El Din (Saladin) and later developed by Egyptian rulers throughout its 700 years of history as a seat of government and residence for its rulers. Having survived attacks from both Crusader forces and political conflicts within Cairo or Egypt, the Citadel is now a preserved historic site complete with mosques, museums and many palaces. With views over the city and the Muqattam Hills providing an imposing backdrop, it is no wonder that the Citadel continues to captivate visitors with its impressive grandeur.
