Nonomiya Shrine is a small and quaint shrine hidden away close to the Arashiyama Bamboo forest. This shrine has an unusual sight upon entry: a black torii gate! Black gates are pretty rare nowadays but they are actually the oldest forms of torii in the Shinto religion. This shrine is also mentioned in The Tale of Genji, believed to be the oldest novel in the world! Make sure to come here if you want to experience Japanese history.
