Gokayama is et another village known for its traditional gasshō-zukuri houses that have been around for over 300 years. I highly recommend to go here if you are visiting Shirakawago by car, as it is a little bit more difficult to access and requires to change the bus in Ogimachi. However, you will be rewarded with less crowds and less intrusion from modern buildings. Gokyama is smaller than Shirakawago but not less charming! The region includes villages like Ainokura and Suganuma, each with their own unique history and architecture.
