Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto is the most famous shrine, popular for its iconic vermilion torii gates that wind through the forested trails of Mount Inari. Dedicated to Inari, the god of rice, this shrine is also famous for its fox statues, believed to be messengers of Inari. You can hike up the mountain (and you really should!) passing by thousands of torii gates donated by individuals and companies. Along the way, you'll find mini shrines, scenic viewpoints, and tasty local dishes like Inari Sushi and Kitsune Udon. There is no need to get here early as you can easily lose the masses by going further up the mountain.
