The westernmost lighthouse in Iceland

Prohlídka památek

Zpráva od Thrainn Kolbeinsson

This lighthouse is located on the cliffs of Látrabjarg in the Westfjords and is known for marking the westernmost point of Iceland. Built in 1948, this two-story concrete tower stands tall at 60 meters above the sea, with a lantern facing the ocean. Also, in 1947 Látrabjarg was the site of a famous rescue when the British trawler Dhoon capsized beneath the cliffs (like many other before and after that). There is a very interesting information sign about the heroic feat by the cliffs.

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: The westernmost lighthouse in Iceland, located in the Westfjords.

  • Best season: Summer (then you see the puffins and it can be harder to drive there during winter).

  • Best time of day: Sunset is incredible there.

  • Nice to know: It's next to a cliff called Látrabjarg which is one of the best spots in Iceland to see puffins.
