Elafonisi is located 76 km west of Chania and 5 km south of Chrysoskalitissa Monastery, at the southwesternmost tip of Crete.
This beach has been ranked number 1 on Trip Advisor most beautiful beaches!
This oblong peninsula is often split into two by the sea, creating the illusion of a separate island. As a Natura 2000 protected area, Elafonisi is home to sand dunes covered with sea daffodils and junipers. The endangered loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), along with several rare plant and animal species, finds refuge here. To preserve its natural beauty, removing plants, animals, shells, or sand from the area is strictly forbidden.
Elafonisi is famous for its exotic white sand beaches and turquoise waters, reminiscent of the Caribbean. In many areas, the sand appears pink due to countless crushed shells. Near the peninsula’s split, the seawater remains shallow, not exceeding 1 meter in depth, forming a small lagoon that is ideal for children. The shallow water allows visitors to easily cross to the opposite side of the peninsula while carrying their belongings.
The eastern part of the beach, in front of the lagoon, is the most developed and attracts the largest number of visitors. Here, you will find umbrellas, showers, lifeguards, snack bars, and changing rooms. A large parking area is available nearby, along with a few rental accommodations further inland. However, the beaches on either side of the island are quieter and boast stunning azure waters. For those seeking total seclusion or a naturist-friendly spot, a walk along the peninsula will lead to peaceful coves, particularly near its western end.
How to get there
Reaching Elafonisi is easy by car. While several parkings are available near the beach, they can fill up quickly, especially during the summer months, so it's advisable to arrive early. They are not for free and costs about 5 euros for the day.
