Stone Town is an ancient city of Zanzibar, Tanzania, renowned for its unique mixture of Arab, Persian, Indian and European influences. Its architecture, mostly dating back to the 19th century, reflects the diverse cultural influences that have contributed to the town's culture. Corral stone is the main construction material used, giving the town its characteristic reddish-warm color. The heart of Stone Town consists of streets, houses, shops, bazaars and mosques lined up in narrow alleys while the seafront has larger and wider streets. Notable landmarks include historical buildings and sites like former palaces of sultans, fortifications, churches, and mosques. Stone Town was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 for its cultural importance and is a major tourist destination.
