I'm so glad I met some locals who recommended Whenuakura Island, also known as Donut Island! To get there, you’ll need to hire a kayak or paddleboard. I rented a single kayak from the Island View Reserve car park (which is also a freedom campsite) through Surfsup Whenuakura - Donut Island Tours. The two-hour kayak tour was only $30 when I visited, which is super reasonable, especially since they provide a life jacket and wet bag. Make sure to check with the staff to ensure the conditions are safe, though it can sometimes get a bit rough.
Once you're all set, it’s about a 20-minute paddle out to the island. The best part is when you make your way through a cave that opens up to the round hole in the centre of the island, which is how it got its "Donut Island" nickname. The water inside is stunning, and I’ve seen pictures of people jumping in for a swim!
As you explore the island, you'll find that it's a true wildlife sanctuary with breathtaking rock formations, a serene blue lagoon, and lush pohutukawa trees cascading down the sheer cliffs. It's the perfect spot to unwind and connect with nature. After exploring the hole, you can paddle around the other nearby islands and enjoy your full two-hour hire. It’s such a fun experience and budget-friendly for solo travellers.
If you’re a bit nervous about heading out alone, you can tell the staff, and they’ll send you out at the same time as others renting kayaks, so you’ll feel safer around people. For those who prefer a more guided experience, the company also offers group tours with knowledgeable guides. In my opinion, this is a must-do activity if you’re in the area, so don’t miss out, get out there and have fun!
