No trip to Port Renfrew is complete without a stop at Fairy Lake, home to the iconic tiny tree growing out of an old log. It’s a scene straight out of a fairytale, and over the years, it’s become one of the most photographed spots on the island. Rumour has it the tree has been clinging to that log for over 40 years, though I must admit, it’s starting to look a little worse for wear.
One of the cool things about Fairy Lake is how much the water level changes with rainfall and tides. Some days, the tree is completely submerged, while other times, it stands well above the water.
A small hidden waterfall tumbles through the trees just across the road from the lake—it’s especially impressive after heavy rain. And if you have time, the forest campground next to the lake is worth exploring, with beautiful old spruce trees and a peaceful atmosphere. It’s also a great place to camp—if you can snag a spot.
A word of caution: Drivers can come around the corners quickly, so be mindful when pulling over or walking near the road.
