This hike is such a special experience in and with nature that I highly recommend it despite the higher price! The Perućica primeval forest is around 20,000 years old, with the oldest trees around 300 years and over 50 meters high! Hiking here, you feel like a guest in a place that is much older and wiser then you, it's humbling. To protect the forest, you are only allowed to enter with a certified guide who knows the area well and can take you along the unmarked hiking trails. Keeping a forest primeval means to not change anything – if a tree falls, it stays exactly where it landed. So local knowledge is vital to find your way through the woods. The guides also have extensive knowledge about the wildlife in the area so the hike really felt like a safari – our guide pointed out traces of animals and past natural disasters that we would never have noticed by ourselves. The hike down through the forest to the Skakavac waterfall is challenging, the last part goes down so steep that you have to walk on all fours in some parts. But it's so worth it! Only 16 people per day are allowed to visit the waterfalls so you are almost guaranteed to have it all to yourself!
