Kaunas Castle is an impressive medieval Gothic castle located in Kaunas, Lithuania. Built during the mid-14th century, it was developed as a defensive outpost and guarded nearby cities as well as trade routes. Today, only one-third of the castle still stands. It has since been adapted to new defensive purposes through the construction of an artillery bastion near the round tower, and various other reinforcements. The castle serves many purposes today, including a branch of the Kaunas City Museum, which offers visitors plenty to explore and learn about this incredible edifice. It also occasionally hosts festivals, and even recently welcomed a new sculpture, the "Freedom Warrior" which stands atop a granite pedestal. In general, Kaunas Castle is an interesting historical relic that provides plenty of opportunities for enjoyment and education.
