“Sistelo” was originally a medieval hamlet, period from which seem to subsist traces amongst elements such as the location of the stone made cross (crucifix), the fountain or even the houses placements.

The most outstanding architectural element, however, is much more recent. This is the so-called “Casa do Castelo” (Castle’s House); a revivalist palace of rectangular plant, with two towers, presenting battlements flanking the frontispiece and neo-gothic tomb. The set, which dominates a natural landscape of undeniable beauty, was built in the second half of the 19th century by a native of the parish returned from Brazil and first Viscount of Sistelo, Manuel A. Gonçalves Roque.
