Chapel famous for its exterior of blue & white tiles painted with scenes from the lives of saints.

The Capela das Almas, or Chapel of Souls – located in the bustling Santo Ildefonso district of Porto, Portugal, is an awe-inspiring sight. The entire exterior of the neoclassical Saint Catherine Chapel (built in 1929) is decorated with an impressive 15,947 individual blue and white ceramic tiles, creating a vast, complex design – a tribute to the Delft tiles of the 19th century. This tilework displays fascinating scenes depicting the lives of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Catherine – including their demise and martyrdom – as well as heavenly angels in flight and intricate decorative filigree. Visitors to the chapel are also treated to a stained glass window above the door – a scenic tribute to 'Dal Almas'. The Chapel of Souls invites completes the experience with free entry and varied hours, being conveniently accessible via metro. It's an excellent example of stunning architecture coupled with spiritual practice.
