If you've ever dreamed of seeing whales up close, the Azores is the place to do it. These islands are one of the best whale-watching destinations in the world, with over 25 different species passing through its waters. And if you want an unforgettable experience, Terra Azul is the way to go. Based in São Miguel, Terra Azul offers eco-friendly tours that bring you face-to-face with some of the ocean’s most majestic creatures. Whether you're hoping to spot a giant blue whale, a playful pod of dolphins, or even the elusive sperm whale, this tour is an absolute must.

Why the Azores is a Whale-Watching Hotspot

The Azores sit smack in the middle of the Atlantic, right along major migration routes. That means whales and dolphins are here year-round. The best times to visit depend on what you want to see:

March to June – Peak season for blue whales, the largest animals on the planet.

Year-round – Sperm whales (the Azores’ resident giants) and several dolphin species stick around all year.

Summer months – More chances to spot humpbacks, fin whales, and even orcas.

What to Expect on Tour

Terra Azul runs small-group tours from the marina in Vila Franca do Campo, a charming coastal town about 30 minutes from Ponta Delgada.

Here’s what the experience is like:

  1. Briefing at the Marina – Before heading out, the guides explain what you might see, how they find the whales, and why responsible tourism is so important.

  2. Heading Out to Sea – You’ll hop on a rigid inflatable boat (RIB), which is fast, fun, and gets you closer to the action.

  3. Spotting Whales & Dolphins – With the help of onshore lookouts (or "vigias"), the captain heads straight to where the whales are.

  4. Enjoying the Show – Whether it’s a whale breaching in the distance or dolphins riding the waves next to the boat, every trip is different, and every sighting is special.

  5. Returning to Shore – After a couple of hours at sea, you’ll head back to land with memories (and photos) that last a lifetime.

Tips for Your Whale-Watching Trip

To make the most of your experience, keep these tips in mind:

✔️ Dress in layers – The ocean can be chilly, even on sunny days.

✔️ Wear sunscreen – The reflection off the water can be sneaky.

✔️ Bring a camera – But also take a moment to just soak it all in.

✔️ Take motion sickness meds if needed – The boats move fast, and the waves can be rough.

✔️ Book in advance – Tours fill up quickly, especially in peak season.

How to Book Your Tour

Terra Azul operates out of Vila Franca do Campo, and you can book your trip online through their website. Tours run daily, weather permitting, and last around 2.5 to 3 hours.
