If you're looking to explore Charleston’s eerie past, head over to Bulldog Tours. They have 6 different tours exploring Charleston's eerie past and most haunted locations. The Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon and The Old City Jail are must-visit spots filled with history, hauntings, and a touch of the macabre.

The Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon

Built in 1771, the Old Exchange played a key role in Charleston’s history—hosting Revolutionary War protests, secret gunpowder stashes, and even a ball for President George Washington. But beneath the grandeur lies the Provost Dungeon, where American prisoners of war, including three signers of the Declaration of Independence, were held in brutal conditions by the British in the 1780s. Before that, pirates like Stede Bonnet were imprisoned here at the Half-Moon Battery.

Today, the dungeon is considered one of Charleston’s most haunted locations. Visitors report whispers, moans, and even the feeling of being touched or pushed by unseen forces. The spirits here—especially in the dungeon—are said to be aggressive, making it a spine-chilling experience.

The Old City Jail

For even darker history, the Old City Jail held Charleston’s most notorious criminals from 1802 to 1939, including pirates and Civil War prisoners. It’s infamous for stories of Lavinia Fisher, said to be America’s first female serial killer, whose ghost supposedly still lingers.

With Bulldog Tours’ exclusive access, you can walk through the jail’s dimly lit hallways and cells, hearing tales of harrowing punishments and eerie encounters. Many have reported cold spots, ghostly touches, and unsettling noises in the night.
