Ocean Beach (a near neighbour of Waimarama Beach), also known as Waipuka, is relatively undeveloped and popular with surfers and families. It is a great spot for photography especially if you're looking for something slightly different than the more popular Waimarama Beach.

Gates restricting vehicle access to the car park are closed every day between 8pm and 6am.

I have visited Ocean Beach at sunset and although it was moody on the day I went it was still so beautiful and rugged. There are great views towards Bare Island and I was lucky enough to get a brief moment of sunlight lighting up the island. This spot would also be beautiful at sunrise and golden hour.

Take your wide angle (16-35mm or similar) and zoom lens (70 - 200mm) with you for this spot. These shots were taken directly in front of the carpark by the surf club.

There are two walks along Ocean Beach:

1. South along the beach to Waimārama (7.5km one way). Make sure you check tide times before you go, tell someone where you are walking and allow 4 1/2 hours return.

2. North along the beach to Whakapau Bluff (8 km one way; allow 4.5 hours return). Whakapau Bluff prevents easy access to the stretch of coast north to Cape Kidnappers (Te Kauwae-a-Māui), although locals know a reef/sandbar just off shore that can be waded at low tide if no surf is running.
