There are several worthwhile destinations within about an hour of Copenhagen!

If you are visiting Copenhagen for more than a few days, I would highly recommend adding in a day trip or two! Here are my top recommendations:

  • Roskilde: I love Roskilde. It's a charming and historic town with a lot to see. Roskilde Cathedral and the Viking Ship Museum are absolutely worth a visit. I haven't been to Ragnarok museum, but I've heard it's also great!

  • Helsingør: Helsingør is the home of Kronborg Castle , aka Hamlet's castle (in Hamlet, the town is called Elsinore). I think Kronborg is one of the coolest castles to visit in the Copenhagen area. Helsingør also has the Maritime Museum and my favorite spa hotel, Marienlyst Beach Hotel (Marienlyst Strandhotel) .

  • Louisiana Museum: Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is a fantastic modern art museum that also has beautiful grounds surrounding it. They have an art studio for kids and a great cafe. You could combine the Louisiana with Kronborg Castle in one day, but be strategic about time and expect it to be a long day!

  • Hillerød: Hillerød is another cute town with a castle, Frederiksborg Castle . Frederiksborg is beautiful and surrounded by a lake/moat situation. It has very Versaille-inspired gardens, and you can take kids on the mini-ferry around the castle! There is also a playground and a shopping street close by.

  • Malmø, Sweden: Malmø is a city in Sweden that is literally 20 minutes from Copenhagen by train. The train crosses the Øresund, both above the water on a bridge, and underwater through a tunnel. If you want to knock out another country on your Denmark trip, Malmø is an easy way to do it! (For Malmø recs, check out my friend Madeline - https://madelineraeaway.com/)

  • Dragør: Okay, Dragør might be a little close to call it a "day trip" -- it's literally just on the other side of Copenhagen airport -- but I do feel like it's a bit of a "commitment" to go since it's not very convenient by public transit. Dragør is a historic town just south of Copenhagen that is incredibly charming. If you have time, visit in the summer and explore the old town, or come for the Christmas market in the winter.
