World Heritage of UNESCO, the Sukhothai Historical Park is great testimony of the glorious past of Thailand. Sukhothai was the 1st capital of the country from the 12th to the 14th century. The Park is divided into 3 separate areas. The central area, the most visited and probably the most interesting, includes Wat Maha That which is the most important and impressive temple compound in Sukhothai Historical Park. The imposing esplanade aligns its rows in impressive columns. The two Buddhas seated on each side leave you speechless. The complex is surrounded by moats and ponds which give beautiful reflections especially at sunrise and sunset. The most popular spot is indeed in front of the pond just opposite the sitting buddha, you will see a lot of photographers aligned there waiting for the sun to go down just behind the statue. Quite magical! Take your time, walk around, there are many great vantage points between the buddhas, the columns, the hundreds of chedis and the different ponds and bridges around. The best way to visit the park is definitely by bicycle (can be rented for 30 THB per day in front of ticket office). Hop in and off each site, you can visit the 2 main areas (central and north) in 1 day if wake up early.
