New Zealand's very own Vietnam Halong Bay! The Duke's Nose, or Kairara Rocks, is a stunning track in Whangaroa with dramatic harbour views and rock formations. This hike is such a fun one! The 12-kilometre return track took me about five hours total, including a long 45-minute chill session at the summit to soak in the unreal scenery. Heads up: the carpark operates on a donation system, so bring some spare change to support the trail.
The hike itself is a mix of terrain to keep things interesting. It starts with a heart-pumping incline, followed by downhill and flat sections, leading to a sharp ascent in the final kilometre. That last stretch is no joke, it’s steep, with a bit of rock scrambling at the top. But don’t stress; there’s a metal pole installed to make getting up and down much easier (and safer).
For a quick detour, stop at the Lane Cove Hut, which is only about 20 meters off the trail. It’s a perfect spot to rest, snack, and even dip your feet in the mangroves. The whole trail winds through a gorgeous coastal forest with jaw-dropping views of Whangaroa Harbor and beyond once you hit the summit. It’s a popular hike, and you’ll quickly see why. Lace up those hiking boots, pack some water, and get ready for a scenic sweat session!
