This iconic temple offers a rich cultural experience with its stunning architecture and bustling atmosphere. That said, its popularity means it’s almost always crowded, no matter when you go.

Tips to Avoid the Crowds

  1. Visit Early or Late: Arrive early in the morning (before 8 AM) to enjoy a quieter atmosphere, or visit in the evening when the lanterns are lit and the crowds have thinned out.

  2. Take Side Streets: The main shopping street, Nakamise-dori, is packed with visitors, so consider taking side streets for a more peaceful stroll to the temple.

Rickshaw Ride

One unique way to explore Asakusa is by riding a traditional Tokyo rickshaw. My friend Misa works with the Tokyo Rickshaw team and offers personalized tours. You can DM her on Instagram to see if she’s available for a private tour. It’s a great way to learn more about the area’s history and avoid the crowds while seeing the sights.

Food and Relaxation

After navigating the busy temple grounds, you’ll likely need a break. Fortunately, there’s plenty of street food nearby, from melon pan and taiyaki to freshly fried tempura snacks. Exploring the nearby stalls is half the fun of visiting Sensoji.

If you’re looking for a peaceful spot to recover, head to the Sumida River area just a short walk away. It’s much quieter there, with beautiful views of the river and Tokyo Skytree in the distance—a perfect place to rest and recharge.

My Take

Whenever I have friends visiting Tokyo, Sensoji is always on the list. However, the sheer number of people can be overwhelming, and a break is usually needed. I love pairing the temple visit with some delicious street food and a relaxing stroll by the river.
