Trailhead: Asahiyama Memorial Park

Mt. Moiwa is a popular hiking destination in Sapporo, Hokkaido. The mountain features several trails, with the most popular routes being the Moiwa Trail and the Asahiyama Memorial Park Trail. The trail is beginner friendly and accessible all season but there may be quite a bit of snow in winter months.

Accessibility:

By Car:

  • Parking: Free parking is available at the base of the mountain near the Moiwa Ropeway Station. The parking area can fill up quickly, especially on weekends and during peak seasons, so it's advisable to arrive early.

By Public Transport:

  • From Sapporo Station: Take the Sapporo Streetcar to the Ropeway Iriguchi stop, followed by a short bus ride or a 15-minute walk to the Moiwa Ropeway Station.

  • Bus and Taxi: Buses run frequently from central Sapporo to the base of Mt. Moiwa. Alternatively, taxis are available for a quicker, more direct route.

Accommodation:

  • Sapporo City Hotels: Staying in downtown Sapporo offers convenient access to Mt. Moiwa, with a variety of accommodations ranging from budget to luxury options. The mountain is only a short bus or taxi ride away, making it easy to explore other attractions in Sapporo as well.

General Information:

Mt. Moiwa, standing at 531 meters, is one of Sapporo's most accessible and beloved mountains, offering panoramic views of the city and the Ishikari Bay. The mountain is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, especially for its night views, which are considered one of the top three in Hokkaido.

The hike to the summit typically starts from the Moiwa Ropeway Station, where you can choose to hike the entire way or take the ropeway part of the journey. The trail is well-maintained, making it suitable for beginners and families. The hike itself is relatively short, taking about 1 to 1.5 hours depending on your pace.

The trail is moderately steep in some sections but overall manageable, with handrails and steps in the steeper areas. Along the way, you'll pass through lush forests that are especially beautiful in the autumn when the leaves change color. At the summit, you'll find an observation deck, a restaurant, and a small shrine, all offering breathtaking views of Sapporo.

For those looking for a more relaxed experience, the Moiwa Ropeway and Morris Car (a mini cable car) can take you directly to the summit, where you can enjoy the views without the hike. The summit is particularly famous for its "sea of clouds" phenomenon on early mornings.

Season:

  • The best time to hike Mt. Moiwa is from late spring to autumn (May to October). The trails can be icy in winter, so proper gear is recommended if you plan to hike during the colder months. The ropeway operates year-round, offering a safe and scenic way to the top even in winter.

Points of Interest:

  • Moiwa Shrine: Located near the summit, this small shrine is a peaceful spot to reflect and enjoy the surrounding nature.

  • Observation Deck: The summit offers a 360-degree view of Sapporo and the surrounding area. The night view is particularly stunning.

  • Moiwa Ropeway: A convenient and scenic option for those who prefer not to hike the entire way.
