One of my absolute favorite trails on Mt. Mitake is also one of the easiest, making it perfect for a peaceful day out in nature. This trail winds along a serene stream, surrounded by lush greenery, which creates a calming atmosphere that feels worlds away from the bustle of Tokyo. I make it a point to visit at least once a year because it offers such a tranquil escape.
Along the way, you can stop by two waterfalls that are famous for their use in religious waterfall training. The sound of the water cascading down and the peaceful surroundings make these spots feel almost sacred. This trail is also incredibly family-friendly, making it an ideal choice for those in Tokyo looking to introduce their loved ones to the joys of hiking. It’s a hidden gem that offers both natural beauty and a touch of spiritual significance.
Starting Point: Head to Mitake Shrine from the ropeway station.
Trail Details:
Distance: Approximately 4 km round trip
Time Required: 1 to 2 hours
Route Description:
Initial Descent from Mitake Shrine: From the shrine, follow the path down toward the Rock Garden area. The trail winds gently through dense forest and gradually descends toward the valley, with mossy trees and rocky terrain adding a mystical atmosphere.
Entering the Rock Garden: As you reach the Rock Garden, you’ll find yourself walking alongside a clear stream that flows through moss-covered boulders and lush greenery. The path is well-maintained and marked, making it easy to follow.
Highlights: Don’t miss Nanayo Falls, a small but picturesque waterfall, and Ayahiro Falls, another charming spot for photos and a rest. The mossy stones, clear pools, and shaded forest canopy make this section particularly peaceful.
Returning to the Shrine: After exploring the Rock Garden, you can retrace your steps back up to the shrine or continue on to nearby trails if you wish to extend your hike.
