Hike
Hike
6-8h
This trail is ideal for those taking public transportation for a day trip from Tokyo, but it’s crucial to start your day early. I’d recommend being at Okutama Station no later than 8:00 AM to ensure you have enough daylight throughout your hike. Make sure to catch the Mitake Ropeway back down before the final departure — I’ve missed the last ropeway once, and trust me, hiking down in the dark wasn’t fun! So plan your timing well to avoid any mishaps.
Trailhead:
Okutama Station
The hike starts at Okutama Station, easily accessible via the JR Chuo Line. From the station, you can walk to Atago Shrine where the trail begins.
Hike Details:
Distance: Approximately 13 km
Duration: 6-7 hours
Difficulty: Moderate
1. Start from Okutama Station:
Walk to Atago Shrine. The initial section is a lot of stairs.
2. Mt. Nokogiri (Nokogiriyama):
The first key stop along the trail is Mt. Nokogiri, offering fantastic views of the surrounding Okutama mountains. The ascent to Mt. Nokogiri is steady but becomes more strenuous near the summit. You’ll pass through ridges, so take a break to enjoy the sweeping vistas.
3. Mt. Odake Summit:
Continue along the ridge to the summit of Mt. Odake. The peak sits at 1,267 meters and offers panoramic views of Mt. Fuji on clear days, as well as neighboring mountains. The summit is the perfect spot for lunch and taking photos before starting the descent.
4. Descent toward Mitake:
After spending time at the top, start descending towards Mitake Shrine and Mitake-san Village. The descent is well-maintained, though a bit steep in certain parts. You’ll pass through thick forests and encounter several small streams.
5. Mitake Shrine and Mitake-san Village:
Before reaching the ropeway, you’ll pass Mitake Shrine, a spiritual site dating back centuries. It’s worth taking a short detour to visit this beautiful shrine and the surrounding village with traditional inns and eateries.
6. Mitake Ropeway:
After exploring the village, head toward the Mitake Ropeway, which will take you down the mountain. The ropeway offers a scenic ride down and is a relaxing way to end your hike after a long day on the trails.
General Information & Summary:
The hike from Okutama to Mt. Odake is a beautiful blend of lush forests, ridgeline walks, and stunning mountain views. While the initial ascent can be tough, the summit views are worth it. The descent to Mitake Shrine is filled with peaceful nature and history, offering a perfect balance between physical activity and cultural exploration.
