Karaimu Street in Trakai is a picturesque alley lined with traditional Karaites houses. These houses were built by the Karaites, a small ethnic group that settled in Trakai in the 14th century. The Karaites were known for their unique culture and cuisine, which is a fusion of Jewish, Turkish, and Lithuanian influences. The houses in Karaimu Street are built in a distinct architectural style, with three windows and colorful facades. Karaite houses have three windows because in medieval times, the Karaites in Trakai were given the privilege to live in the street now known as Karaimų street. Like other residents of the area, they had to pay tribute to the Grand Duke, but they were able to purchase extra windows, which were a luxury at the time. This allowed them to have houses with three windows facing the street, whereas less wealthy residents had one or two windows. However, there are also some houses in Karaimų street that have four windows.

Today, some of these houses have been converted into restaurants and cafes, where visitors can enjoy traditional Karaite cuisine and learn more about the history and culture of this fascinating community. A visit to Karaimu Street is a must for anyone interested in history, architecture, and culinary traditions.
