This beautiful levada is a less-traveled path located beneath the Levada do Caldeirão Verde. It is one of the oldest levadas in the region, and since it’s not part of the PR Route, it’s less frequently checked and maintained. Be cautious, as you may encounter landslides and/or rockfalls here more often!
As you walk, the path takes you past various plants. You might enjoy downloading the app ‘Plantsnap,’ so you can take photos of plants along the way and the app will tell you what they are.
At the start of the hike, you’ll encounter introduced vegetation, and as you progress, the path reveals the unique plants of the laurel forest, such as laurel, heath, and uveira.
Enjoy the open spaces along the route that offer fantastic views of Santana, São Jorge, and Ilha. Keep an eye out for a tunnel – it’s a good idea to bring a flashlight and a cap to protect your head.
The levada ends at Ribeira dos Arcos, a perfect spot to rest before heading back along the same path. Along the ribeira, you’ll find small lagoons – a refreshing place to cool off.
