The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a stunning 19.4 km (12 mile) hike through the incredible alpine landscapes in New Zealand's oldest national park and a dual UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is heralded as one of the best single-day treks in the world, offering an adventure full of steep climbs, unpredictable weather and incredible sights. Take in the breath-taking summit views of Ngauruhoe, Tongariro and Ruapehu volcanoes, and enjoy exploring the unique landforms.
As you traverse this breathtaking alpine route, you'll encounter a dynamic array of geological wonders, from volcanic craters to emerald lakes, all set against a backdrop of rugged, barren terrain that seems plucked from a fantasy novel.
Be sure to plan well and prepare for your day with a guide if needed (personally I would recommend a guide during winter and snowfall but otherwise you can do this track unguided) and the right transport options, and you can be guaranteed an unforgettable experience and photography opportunity.
For guides (especially during winter) check out Adrift Tongariro: https://adriftnz.co.nz/.

In my opinion the best spots for landscape photography along the hike are the Emerald Lakes, The Red Crater and the Blue Lake. Take your wide angle and zoom lens with you but also pack light as this is a challenging hike.
