Praia De Machico is the only beach on Madeira Island that has real sand, rather than stones. Here, visitors can spend a leisurely day soaking up the sun, wading into the calm waters, and enjoying the scenic views of the bay. It was on this beach that Mariners Tristao Vaz Teixeira and Joao Goncalves Zarco first landed to claim the island for Portugal in 1419. There are groynes extended into the bay to make sure the surf won’t carry away the sand, and there are plenty of eateries and refreshment stands nearby. Whether you’re looking for a spot to cool off with a dip or an idyllic place to relax, Praia de Machico is the ideal destination.
