Vereda do Larano is an amazing coastal hike located along the eastern coast of Madeira Island. This scenic 9-kilometer one way trail offers hikers stunning views of the ocean below, as well as a chance to enjoy wildflowers and many other wonderful sights.

I can tell for sure, that it is one of the most beautiful and exhilarating trails in the region.

If you love adventure and want to test your hiking skills, Vereda do Larano is definitely worth a visit. And here is some tips for you about this hike:

  1. I recommend to start this hike from the Cabo de Larano viewpoint towards Porto da Cruz (rather than from the city, as most guidebooks and Google Maps suggest). This way, the hike will be a bit shorter (just 9 km) and on a relatively flat surface with a slight downward slope, making the walk truly easy and enjoyable.

  2. After walking about 4.5 km, you will reach the Boca do Risco viewpoint. From here, you can either turn back to the parking lot

  3. or turn right and walk for about 5 km along the Levada do Larano to the town of Machico. However, in this case, don’t forget to arrange for transportation back - it’s best to have two cars, one at the start of the hike and another at the end.

The Vereda do Larano hike is suitable for a variety of abilities, making it a great option for adventurers of all ages and levels of expertise.
