Varkaankuru Path is 3.4-km loop trail in Äkäslompolo, known for its stunning gorge, stream and forest grove. The route takes you through the unique Varkaankuru grove forest, where you can hear the soothing sounds of a mountain stream. It's a popular spot for birding, hiking, and snowshoeing, so you might bump into some fellow nature enthusiasts along the way. Varkaankuru stream area is a restricted zone, that protects the unique herb-rich forest and the species living there, so just remember to stick to the marked path and enjoy the peaceful beauty of this old national park.
At the highest point of this path, you will find a campfire site, and if you want to make an additional hike to the top of the fell, you can follow the path from the campfire site up to the left to Kellostapuli fell.
Starting point: Yllästunturi Visitor Centre Kellokas. I recommend walking the path in a different direction than what Outdoor Active advises (link).
Note: I really recommend also climbing to the top of the fell and making this trip longer, enjoying the nature and eating snacks by the fireplace. Then you should reserve more time for the trip, approx. 3-4 hours.
