Message from Stay Classy

If you have done just a little research on Lisbon, you have most likely heard of this place. And while some people would call this a tourist trap, we strongly disagree.

That is because this is the birthplace of Portugal's best sweet treat. The Pastel de Nata is a little sweet, crunchy pastry filled with a silky smooth custard.

However, the recipe used at this particular bakery is the original, which is why they are referred to as Pasteis de Belem.

The history of the Pasteis de Natas dates back to the 18th century and was invented by nuns. Back then, the nuns would use lots of egg whites to iron their clothing, leaving them with lots of egg yolks that they decided to put into use by creating sweets. Here, among the most popular are the Pastel de Nata.

This is also the reason that you will find custard-filled sweets all over Portugal as this was a common traditional way to make use of all the egg yolks.

We recommend you to go in the morning as the line tends to build up rapidly during the day.
