The PR13 Vereda do Fanal is one of Madeira’s most enchanting hikes, taking you through the island’s ancient laurel forests, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This moderate trail, stretching from the high-altitude Paul da Serra plateau to the magical Fanal forest, is a photographer's dream with its moss-covered trees, misty atmosphere, and breathtaking views.

As of January 1st 2025, Madeira requires tourists to pay a €3 hiking fee for recommended routes (PR trails), to help preserve the island's natural beauty and manage the growing number of tourists. if you do not pay you could be fined up to €50. Children under 12 and Madeira residents are exempt.
