Lamb's Conduit Street in Holborn, London is named after William Lambe who generously donated funds for the rebuilding of the gift of water to this area. The conduit ran from the tributary of the river Fleet forming along the north side of Long Yard and fed the nearby Snow Hill area with its system of pipes. This supplied the poor women living here with 120 pails! This fountain commemorating Lamb's Conduit is situated at the junction of Lamb's Conduit Street and Guilford Street, on the boundary between the former Metropolitan Boroughs of Holborn and St Pancras. Notable resident include Church of England clergyman and poet, John Mason Neale, born at 40 Lamb's Conduit Street, as well as John Lind and John Haslam. It is also known for independent traders, the pub 'The Lamb' and 'The People's Supermarket'. Virginia Woolf uses the architecture here to arouse her "historic sense" in her 1922 novel Jacob's Room.
