I don’t know who decided Australia should have a collection of giant sculptures, but I have to give them credit, the Big Prawn is absolutely hilarious. Situated in Ballina, this massive 9-meter prawn monument is a nod to the local prawning industry and has been a landmark since 1989. Originally built by two Hungarian brothers to lure travelers to their service station, this iconic prawn weighs a staggering 35 tonnes, about as heavy as six adult elephants! It was initially tailless but got a bit of a makeover in 2013, including a new tail, and was relocated. Even though it lost its interior staircase during the renovations, the Big Prawn remains a beloved symbol of Ballina and a must-see for anyone passing through. It’s a quick spot for a quirky photo op and a fun reminder of the unique roadside attractions in Australia.
