Despite its ominous name, the Gorge of the Dead—also known as Zakros Gorge—owes its title not to a dark legend but to the Minoan tombs discovered in its caves. Nestled in the southeastern corner of Crete, this breathtaking canyon is not only a geological wonder but also an archaeological treasure, attracting hikers, history enthusiasts, and nature lovers alike.

A Scenic and Accessible Hike

The gorge begins near the village of Ano Zakros, winding through towering cliffs before reaching the stunning Kato Zakros Beach and the Minoan Palace of Zakros. Stretching about 4 km, the hike is relatively easy, taking around 2 to 2.5 hours to complete one wat. As part of the E4 European long-distance trail, it offers well-marked paths, making it an ideal trek for hikers of all levels.

You can enter the gorge from two access points:

  1. The main entrance near Ano Zakros, 38 km south of Sitia.

  2. A shorter route, located 4 km from Ano Zakros, which allows for a quicker descent.

The initial stretch is slightly steep but manageable, leading to the riverbed, which remains dry in summer. As you walk, you’ll be surrounded by towering rock faces that rise up to 350 meters, dotted with the ancient burial caves of the Minoans—hence the name, Caves of the Dead.

The tombs of the Gorge of the Dead come from a unique burial tradition 4000 years ago. At the time, the Minoans had to carry and somehow haul their deceased up the gorge's sheer cliffs. Although the reasoning behind this is unclear, some archeologists suggest that the Minoans expected their dead to resurrect. Hence, they often placed them high up on cliffs to avoid disturbance.

A Rewarding End to the Journey

The hike concludes near Kato Zakros, where you can explore the Minoan Palace, relax at the beach, or enjoy a meal at the seaside tavernas. For those who parked in Ano Zakros, a public bus service provides a convenient return option, eliminating the need to retrace your steps.

Best Time to Visit

While the gorge is accessible year-round, spring (March to May) is the ideal season to visit. During this time, the landscape is adorned with vibrant wildflowers, and the mild temperatures make for a pleasant hiking experience before the peak summer crowds arrive.

Bring enough water, a hat, sunscreen and sturdy shoes with you.
