Paleochora has a South coast flair without the large hotel complexes. It's promenade is lined with traditional tavernas, cafes, and shops, creating a lively atmosphere in the evenings. Even in the summer season, the streets are closed to normal car traffic in the evening. The tavern owners put their chairs and tables on the streets and the atmosphere invites you to have a seat and enjoy. Despite the progressive tourism, it has remained a charming small town.

If you are a History enthusiast than you will appreciate the remnants of the Venetian fort “Selino,” which offers panoramic views of the area. The town also hosts a variety of cultural events, including music festivals and local celebrations. In this village, you sometimes get the impression that time has stood still.

All facilities like banks, post office, shops, supermarkets, pharmacy etc are available in this town. Paleochora is connected via ferry with the towns Sougia, Agia Roumeli, Loutro, Chora Sfakion and Gavdos.

The availability of so many beaches near Paleochora makes it very tempting to have a beach day. The beach is well organised with sunbeds and umbrellas. You also have the option to do organised beach trips.

Hiking is popular in the area and you have a couple of options for fantastic day trips.

For example:

  • Anidri Gorge

  • E4 to Elafonisi and Kedrodasos

  • E4 to Sougia
