Keilir is a pretty iconic mountain located on the Reykjanes Peninsula and probably the mountain in Iceland that has been seen by the most people (even though most tourists probably don't know they've seen it). As you drive from the Keflavík Airport, Keilir is the cone shaped mountain on your right. It was formed during a subglacial fissure eruption and stands at 378 metres above sea level and offers magnificent views of the surrounding area. It has been used as a landmark by fishermen and sailors for centuries, and its volcano also awoke to life in 2021. It is a relatively popular hike for nature enthusiasts and I can highly recommend it.

To get to it, you turn here off road 41 and drive until you reach this parking spot. From there you follow the designated trail through the lava field.

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: A cone shaped mountain on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

  • Best season: Summer (hard to drive there during winter and the ascent can get icy).

  • Best time of day: Sunrise and sunset there is very special.

  • Nice to know: Try to follow the designated trail through the lava field. There is a great 360° view from the top and a viewing circle with information about the places all around you.
