Hvítserkur is an iconic rock formation located on the eastern shore of Vatnsnes Peninsula in Northwest Iceland. The 15 meter tall basalt rock stack, which takes its name from the extensive birdlife that nests on top of it, stands out due to its distinctive shape and is often dubbed the 'Troll of Northwest Iceland'. For those interested in photography, Hvítserkur makes for a great subject during any season. Make sure you go down to the beach for a better view and take note of the tides in case you want it surrounded by ocean or if you want to be able to go close to it. Whatever your interest it's an amazing place to visit, making for a great addition to any trip.

Fun fact: Folklore says that the rock was originally a troll, petrified by the rising sun when it attempted to rip the bells down from Þingeyraklaustur convent.

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: An iconic rock formation in the North of Iceland.

  • Best season: Any.

  • Best time of day: Depends on what you like but if you want to be able to go close to it then aim for low tide, if you want to photograph it surrounded by ocean then aim for high tide.

  • Nice to know: You can see it from the cliffs above but I would recommend you try to get down to the beach via the semi-sketchy trails (easy in summer but can be hard during winter).
