Located in the rural town of Ohara, about an hour north of central Kyoto, Sanzenin Temple is a popular destination for those looking to explore the history and religious sites of the area. The Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism temple was founded by revered monk Saicho and has a variety of buildings, gardens and walking paths to enjoy. Visitors to Sanzenin can admire the Ojo Gokuraku-in Hall through maple and cedar trees across a moss garden, and find amusing stone statues amongst the tranquil atmosphere.
