Itsukushima is an island in the western part of Japan's Inland Sea, located in the northwest of Hiroshima Bay. It is renowned as a sacred site, and is known to locals as "Miyajima" ('Shrine Island'). Almost two thousand people inhabit Itsukushima, many of whom work hard to preserve its beautiful forests and beaches, allowing visitors to experience its natural wonders. Visitors often travel by ferry from the mainland to visit the famous Itsukushima Shrine, where they marvel at the torii gate that appears to float above the water, or climb Mount Misen via Miyajima Ropeway for full views of the Seto Inland Sea. Tourists can also enjoy Momijidani Park and the Marine Plaza Miyajima to purchase souvenirs and experience the local culture. Itsukushima is one of Hayashi Gahō's Three Views of Japan specified in 1643, and is a cultural destination that will mesmerize all who visit it.
