Tōfuku-ji is one of the most popular and impressive Zen temples in Kyoto. Visitors come from all over Japan to appreciate its spectacular autumn leaves which reach peak color around mid to late November. With a history dating back to 1236, it features many impressive and historical structures, including the 22 meter tall Sanmon Gate, the Hondo (main hall), the Zendo (meditation hall), the Shoro (bell tower) and the Tosu (lavatory). Be sure to visit the Hojo, former living quarters of the head priest, and its unique gardens - each with its own special character. Lastly, don't miss the Tsutenkyo Bridge affording iconic views of the colorful valley below. Tofukuji is definitely not to be missed!
