Smutwood Peak is a challenging, but rewarding hike in Kananaskis Country that offers stunning views of Mt. Birdwood and Birdwood Lakes. It makes for one of those long (18.9 km out and back), but rewarding days in the mountains that you’ll cherish forever and it would easily make it to our top 5 hikes in Rockies!
The trail starts with an easy walk along an old logging road, leading to a gradual ascent through alpine meadows and steep switchbacks. The final stretch involves some scrambling, making it a moderate to hard hike for experienced hikers.
