Gullfoss is one of the best known waterfalls in Iceland and belongs to the so called Golden Circle. At this place the river Hvítá coming from the close glacier Lángjökull is falling in three steps into a massive canyon. This place is also the last stop before the highlands. The ancient route Kjölur is heading from this point over the highlands up north.
The waterfall is easy accessible as parts of the walking path are asphalted. You pass the souvenir shop on the left side and follow the walking path. The asphalt on the higher level will allow also handicapped people to reach the first platform. The paths at the downside, closer to the waterfall are not as easy to walk and might be closed in the wintertime due to ice. But if they are open it is definitely worth it to take a closer look to the waterfall even though you might become wet.
Insider tip: The souvenir shop offers delicious hot chocolate. I would recommend to drink it with whipped cream and add some cinnamon on top.
