Tetebatu Monkey Forest is a lush jungle sanctuary in Lombok, Indonesia, where grey macaques and black langur monkeys roam freely. While hiking in the forest, you can spot different types of monkeys. You can either come with a guide, hire one on the spot, or explore on your own.

We chose to go on our own, walked for 30 minutes, and initially spotted nothing—until we met two local women working in the fields who led us to a spot where we saw families with over 20 black monkeys. It was incredible to see them peacefully sleeping and playing in the trees. I definitely recommend coming with a guide, as we didn’t know what to look for on our own.

* Wear mosquito spray and shoes. Also be careful with your belongings and avoid getting too close, especially with the grey macaques, as they can be more aggressive.
